2 | Base Camp

Part of our Ultimate Oz package included a trip to Port Stephens around 2 hours north of Sydney. We arrived at a campsite with 2 wooden lodges for our group to stay in. After being in Australia a few days now I have finally being christened by seeing a big spider which hung over the door way of our cabin, great!

We had an induction on the two day schedule accompanied by josie the resident orphaned kangaroo. Although she was cute her claws looked like they could do some serious damage. She actually scratched a couple of the girls but seemed to warm towards the guys; scaring off the competition ey…

The first night was pretty chilled. We strayed down to the beach with a few beers and looked at the stars which were the clearest I have ever seen. We sat and chilled for a while before heading back dazed by the spectacle we had witnessed. No, it was not the stars but the dancing from some of our group that could not help but catch the eye.

On the second day we headed to the sand dunes and port area for a dolphin tour. We went sand boarding on the largest coastal sand dunes in the entire World, the views were fantastic. The cruise was relaxed and I even managed to chat to a couple of the locals for a short while who were giving me advice on where to go in the country. They could not stop ranting about New Zealand though, it must be good.

We did not see any pods, however we saw a couple pass around 20m from the boat before disappearing out of existence. The evenings main entertainment was the wild life show. A local reptile handler brought round a variety of non-venous (sadly) lizards and snakes which were great to handle as I have never had the chance to get this close to one or expected too. The python had a rubbery texture to it and almost started to tickle me as it slithered up my arm, licking me with its tongue on the way up, fantastic.

The camp was a great introduction to the Ozzy adventure and hopefully a small taste on what is to come.
