Surfers paradise rises into the sky straight off the beach. It almost feels like an Australian version of Benidorm. I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing. The hostel where we stayed was pretty central with most off the CBD located just a moments walk away from the beach. The city has a reputation as a stag-do and partying destination for Aussies that was evident by the amount of bars and cafes that contributed towards most of the high street.
On our second day we went to Dream World theme park which is the largest theme park in Australia. We went on the highest ride in the southern hemisphere where you get lauched backwards at almost 160kmh. Lets say my face just survived. The park in general was pretty good and took a full day to get around with reasonable cues in the off season. It was scorching hot throughout the day so getting any shade came at a premium.
We got tickets to go up the Eureka Tower to watch the sunset from the viewing platform. Despite it being a little cloudy, the views were fantastic up there and you could see along the coastline for miles.
I had my first Korean bbq with Dick from the Netherlands. It was a great opportunity to finally cook for ourselves after being on the road for so long. The food was completely different from what I would normally have, however I am glad I tried it.
Overall the city felt a little plastic and featureless. I would recommend it as a good surfing spot but not somewhere I would jump to see again.
