This was one for the BUCKET LIST...
Ever since I was little, I used to watch the series 'The Crocodile Hunter' where Steve Irwin used to get up close and personal with the largest Salt water crocs, CRIKEY! I knew I would never forgive myself if I came all this way and did not see it.
We spent a whole day at the zoo where we just managed to scrape everything in before the final bus arrived to take us back to Brisbane. Of course the crocodiles are the main attraction but there are also many other animals in the conservation project such as the Komodo Dragon and Giant Tortoise.
The whole vibe of the place felt like Steve was still alive so it is a testament to the legacy he had created. The highlight of the day was watching the Salt water crocodile show in the main arena. The keepers would entice the crocodile out of the water to feed it a dead rat or a piece of meat. When the croc rose out of the water on its back legs next to the podium to grab its lunch, its jaws snapped together in a sound which I can only describe as two cars crashing into each other at speed. The natural habitat for the crocodiles spans across the the top of Australia covering north Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. I made a mental note to myself not to go close to the waters edge in those areas as there would be no chance of me getting out if it pulled me in.
I would definitely go back again if I got the chance.
RIP Steve 'the legend' Irwin
