I don't proclaim to be seriously into the Graffiti scene but this was a must see.
Hosier lane is situated in a hidden away narrow street in the city centre near Federation Square. Any surface available on the street is a potential canvas for the graffiti artists to stamp their mark. There were many different types of styles including tagging, throw-ups, stencilling, wild styles, blockbuster and piece art. To see such a variety in such a small space is amazing and a photographers dream.
Melbourne is one of the capitals of the World for street art with names such as Banksy contributing to the scene. His 2003 stencil piece named the 'Little Diver' was protected by the Melbourne State Government to conserve famous street art.
The street art changes constantly on the lane. It certainly does not lack character with the art lighting up the street with bold bright colours illustrated by the artists.
Me and Matt had a look around for about an hour trying to see as much as possible, which is easier said than done. Some of the artists painted on drain pipes, grates and bin lids making it a real challenge. So far I would say that this is the first place in Australia that I have seen where you feel there is a bit of culture to the place.
We came across a kid on a school trip who was writing "the PUSSY MAN was here" on one of the walls. Maybe one day his art may be worth something ey! I could not resist the opportunity to bring this to the attention of his school mates who burst out laughing when I called out "It's the pussy man" when I walked past him... GOLD.
Here are some of the images I captured from my visit in 2016.
